When I think of Gulf Shores, I think of my coming-of-age story. What started as road trips during infancy, throughout my toddler years and growing awkwardly into my childhood turned into my yearly escape from reality. Gulf Shores holds more memories than my mind can compute. The joke-covered envelopes, unable to be opened until we reached a specific landmark, always filled with souvenir money from my grandpa. The thrill of reuniting with a long-lost friend for a week of fun, just like the old days. The core memories of my dad taking me to the tiny carnival, letting me ride the Red Baron until I nearly puked, then buying me an ice cream cone for the walk home. The deeply-rooted sadness when I learned Hurricane Ivan swept away the entire thing. The rebellion of 16, drinking too many beers when the parents went to sleep. The moonlit nights spent texting that special boy back home. And finally bringing that boy (and eventually his family!) to fall in love with the sand, the food, the views, that shaped who I am today.
My grandparents purchased condos in Gulf Shores before I was even born, which allowed my family to visit the very same beach year after year. Now, as a part owner myself, I long for the day I can take my own kiddos to follow in the sandy footsteps of my most special memories.
